School for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Andy Wilde, Director of Buju Architects and the architect behind one of the first Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC) schools in the country.

Andy wrote a standard specification ‘Designing for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder’ for the National Autistic Society (NAS). The research aims to improve and present the additional measures which should be considered when designing a school for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

The project was to design a specialist school to accommodate children with Autism and understand how children would respond to the space, light and the scale of the building.

At Buju Architects, we are involved from the initial research and consultations, to design features, interventions and suitable specifications.

A large amount of research and consultancy was carried out during the design process, including workshops with educational psychologists, consultations with teachers and parents and detailed design development with the National Autistic Society Academies Trust. The aim was not to overcomplicate the design.

Moving forward, designing for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a focus for the practice.

Any opportunities for research and design are greatly welcomed!
